Watch Me Grow!

sweet potato experiment extension activity

In the spring we like to learn about planting and how things grow. In the Under 3 classroom, we did an experiment with a sweet potato. It is important for the children under 3 to engage in activities with a purpose. We submerged half a sweet potato in water and waited to see what would happen. Within a few weeks, it started to grow roots and shortly after, sprouts started growing out of the top. As an extension to this activity we will cut one of the sprouts, root it and plant it. Planting this will lead to other work such as caring for the plant by watering it, cleaning its leaves and eagerly waiting to see if a new sweet potato will grow!
