Black History Month

Children's art on the Black History month bulletin board

During the month of February, the class has been participating in discussions about Black History. The children learn about prominent Canadian and American figures such as: Mary Ann Shadd, Josiah Henson, Viola Desmond, Richard Pierpoint, Harriet Tubman, Bob Marley and Dr. Martin Luther King. During our discussions of respect, kindness, tolerance, unity and harmony, the children have looked at our differences and similarities between each other to celebrate our individual qualities. The children took part in weaving place mats using construction paper in the shapes of hearts, rectangles and the continent Africa. Using multicultural paper, we decorated hand and people patterns that were incorporated into our classroom board. We are inspired by the Bob Marley song “One Love” with the words “One love when your hand reaches out to me. One heart when we touch a new world we will see.” This fills our hearts with hope for a better world!
