Baking is a practical life skill through which children learn scientific principles such as mixing ingredients to create new substances. Our Under 3 class gathered all of the ingredients and began preparing the cookies in the morning. They mixed the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. We learned about scientific principles such as mixing substances, following recipes, learning to measure liquids and solids, and the effect of heat. In the process, they also enhanced their eye-hand coordination, fine motor development, creativity, self help and independence. We put the cookies in the oven while the children were resting and they woke up to warm, delicious cookies!
