In our Under 3 Montessori classroom, we encourage the children to explore many aspects of science. We observe weather patterns, experience the butterfly life-cycle, take care of our classroom plants and do many other interesting activities to encourage a sense of wonder and appreciation of the world around us. Giving children the freedom to explore objects and materials prepares them for a lifetime of discovery.
On this day, we conducted a science experiment involving baking soda, vinegar, and food colouring. We began by pouring baking soda on to a baking sheet. Then, each child had a turn to use a pipette to transfer drops of food colouring and vinegar onto the baking soda. As the ingredients mixed and reacted, the children watched in joy and astonishment as the colourful baking soda began to bubble and expand.
