The Pythagoras Square

This activity begins with the child bringing a working frame and box to the mat. This box contains 10 squares and 90 rectangles, which are colour coded to match the beads of the Short Bead Stair. Using the contents of the box, the child, working independently or with a partner, builds the Pythagoras Square onto the frame. Using the built square as a reference, the child can then colour in a worksheet that has an image of the Pythagoras Square printed onto it.

This activity helps the child’s visual discrimination of size, shape, and colour. By carrying out this exercise, the children become familiar with algebraic patterns.
