The Mathematical Mind

Child placing coloured rings on dowels

Math is a life-long skill that we work on as soon as the children are able to grasp objects and start to notice patterns and sequences around them. We start by working with quantities of objects such as an assortment of pegs, coloured rings, vehicles, and so on. We count the objects that we have as we work with them. We do a variety of “posting”, placing rings of multiple sizes on dowels in various orientations. We sort objects into 2, 3, and 4 compartments, notice pairs of objects, and insert coloured pegs into numbered math boards. As the children differentiate patterns and notice sequences, we start to quantify objects.

This preliminary work builds the logical mathematical mind that will be further developed in Casa while identifying and working with numerals, combining symbols with quantities and performing mathematical operations.
