Once a week our Casa community gathers in small groups to participate in our French curriculum.
Our French teacher Vicky creates her lessons with a primary focus on oral language lessons to allow for easier and more exciting knowledge retention. In the beginning of each lesson the children review every day greetings, the days of the week and the weather. Then, they are introduced to a variety of topics and curriculum themes, such as Les Salutations (greetings), La Famille (the family), Les Parties du Corps (body parts), La Salle de Classe (the classroom), Les Emotions et Sentiments (emotions and feelings), etc. Short songs, audio books, prop boxes, colouring/drawing and games are only a few of the interactive and fun ways of learning the language.
In this week’s French Class the children identified and learnt the names of farm animals such as le chien (the dog), la vache (the cow), le cochon (the pig), le cheval (the horse), la poule (the hen), etc., by setting up their own farm with the help of the farm animals prop box.
During the week, French is also incorporated in the classroom routine. We count, greet with Bonjour (Good morning) during drop-offs/say Au revoir (Goodbye) at pick-up times and give short commands in French such as Lavez les mains! (Wash your hands!), Asseyez-vous s’il vous plaît! (Sit down please!). We also practice grace and courtesy vocabulary by using Merci (Thank you), S’il te plaît (Please) and Excusez-moi (Excuse me).
