This month, we have been learning about pumpkins and gourds. We observed the different colours, shapes and sizes of pumpkins and gourds. Through books, we learned about the lifecycle of a pumpkin and were able to learn the names of each part of the pumpkin such as the rind, stem and seeds. By having natural objects in the classroom, the children are able to learn through all their senses. We asked the children what each object felt like, smelled like and what they thought the inside looked like. Having natural objects in the classroom is a great way to promote environmental awareness. As the children explore the objects, they become inquisitive of the natural environment around them, helping them to have a better understanding and respect for nature.
