Rock Cycle and Fossil Excavation

We have been learning about the rock cycle in South Casa. We read about and discussed how igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma; how sedimentary rocks are formed as sediments of those rocks are put under pressure over many years; and later, metamorphic rocks are made from pre-existing rocks. After learning about this process, we were then able to have a better understanding of how fossils are made over thousands of years through the same pressure and time it takes as the rock cycle. We used a fossil digging kit to explore the care it takes for archeologists to carefully dig up bones and plant remains to preserve the fossil. Each child took a turn digging and dusting off sediment to uncover 15 different fossils. We read about each one and what they previously were, such as shark teeth or coral.
