Pumpkin Volcanoes!

A collage of children carving, cleaning, exploring, and experimenting with pumpkins

Wow! We had an extraordinary day in North Casa! As a classroom, we experimented with creating Pumpkin Volcanoes.

In the morning, some of the children assisted their teacher to carve and clean the inside of two small unique pumpkins. After clearing the inside of the pumpkins, the children enjoyed the sensorial experience of touching and examining the flesh.

In preparation for our experiment, we used yeast, water, food colouring and soap; and in the other we used baking soda and coloured vinegar. We took turns making predictions about what would happen inside the pumpkins. We then watched carefully as Stephanie mixed the ingredients together in each pumpkin!!! It was so interesting to examine the differences and similarities in each experiment! We determined which ingredients worked best to “explode”. The vinegar and baking soda mixture came in 1st place! The children were so excited to see how the pumpkin volcanoes came to life! Participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities in our Casa program creates opportunities for observations, predictions, thinking about the world and how things work, and creates extraordinary experiences for the children!!!
