Apple Tasting

A golden delicious, royal gala, and granny smith apple on a plate in the middle of a circle of children

During the Autumn months, the children experience many changes around them including the cooler temperatures and colourful fall foliage. It is also a time for harvest and a popular circle time theme involves a delicious fruit: apples! As a learning experience, we tasted three types of apples: Golden Delicious, Royal Gala, and Granny Smith.

Each child received a slice of each variety to taste. They enjoyed sharing how the apples tasted using descriptive words such as sweet, sour, crunchy, and juicy. The children also compared the colours of each apple. We ended our experience by choosing our favourite apple. Each child placed their picture on a chart under their favourite apple. Royal Gala was the classroom favourite!

To extend our learning experience within the work cycle, the children learned about the lifecycle of the apple tree and worked to sequence the stages from seed to seedling and flower to fruit. They also explored types of apples using the nomenclature cards within the Culture section of the Montessori environment.
