In the Under 2 classroom, music and movement happens throughout the day spontaneously. Action songs are a great way to develop many cognitive skills. It’s also a fun, creative way to increase language, enhance eye-hand coordination, develop fine and gross motor skills, and strengthen memory and recall. Children’s action songs offer rich learning experiences that help memorize information and it’s a great way to learn musically, verbally, visually, and physically at the same time.
The Under 2’s favourite action song at the moment is “Sleeping Bunnies”. The teachers change the song to introduce various animals as well as animal sounds (“Sleeping Tigers, Elephants”, etc.). The children lay on the floor pretending to sleep and wait for the cue to wake up, hop like a bunny, make an animal sound or stomp their feet, then stop and restart the game with a new sleeping animal.
