Sign language opens up the world of communication and gives us a better understanding of our environment. In the Under 2 program, we practice sign language in our everyday interactions especially during play and meal times. The teachers use sign language to communicate with the children and vice versa. Children’s receptive language is developed before their verbal communication is mastered. Sign language empowers the children with one another and provides ways to express their feelings, wants and needs. Moreover, it provides an opportunity for children to enhance their fine motor skills.
Here are some examples of children in our classroom signing the words “more”, “please”, and “thank you”.
