As an extension of the Number Rods activity, the child may be introduced to addition
using the rods. Here the child combines two quantities together by
physically placing the corresponding rods end to end. For example, if the equation is
4+1, the child places the rod that represents four on the mat and places the rod that
represents one at the end of it. The child then counts out the quantities to arrive at the
answer.
