Self-Regulation and Micro-Environments

An aquariumLearning to self-regulate is a large part of life in the Under Three Montessori classroom. One way we help children to self-regulate is by providing activities and micro-environments within our classroom that help them to up-regulate (when they need to be energized) and down-regulate (when they need to be relaxed).

There are lots of different areas to work and children are encouraged to choose an area that would work well for them. There are tables available with four chairs (for four friends) and tables available with two chairs (for two friends). Some of the tables are in the middle of the classroom (a busier area) and some are available in nooks between shelves (quieter areas). We also have work mats available for children who would like to sit on the floor.

Our plush ‘quiet carpet’ is a special space the children are drawn to when they are feeling overwhelmed and need space to rest and take a breather, or when they are feeling sleepy and need the space to roll their bodies around to energize themselves. Nearby are our water bottles, where children can re-hydrate, which also produces a calming or rejuvenating effect.

Other special features of our classroom include: our book area, which is set aside from the hustle and bustle and contains a soft carpet and cozy chairs to give children a chance to relax; our walls of tall windows, which allows natural light to shower our classroom; our fish tank, where children can watch fish swimming around; plants throughout our classroom, which children care for and admire; and our baskets of puppets which children play with and cuddle.

Many of these items can either up-regulate or down-regulate children, and over time the teachers help the children to learn which materials or areas help them. Also (sometimes) another child will help by sharing a puppet with a sad friend or rolling on the carpet beside a lethargic friend.
