Science and Sensory With Stephanie!

Science and sensory activities

Stephanie’s children Alexander and Arianna had a great time exploring some simple science and sensory activities.

In a muffin tray, Alexander placed two teaspoons of baking soda in each slot and then he added 3 to 4 drops of his favourite colours of food colouring. We then filled a small spray bottle with equal parts vinegar and water. Just spraying some of the liquid into the baking soda, he created a fizzy reaction, like mini colorful volcanoes.
Trick: The more liquid you add the more fizzy the ingredients become.

Arianna went on an icy treasure hunt using salt to defrost coloured ice cubes filled with small creatures. She used the salt to melt the ice and free the creatures from their little icy homes using tongs and spoons. We used blue food colouring to colour the water in the ice cube tray to make things brighter!
Tip: Use an old cloth or placemat under each activity.

With a few simple ingredients, we had a whole lot of fun. These activities also led into extensions for other learning opportunities about changes between solids and liquids.

What a great time!
