Self-serving provides many opportunities for learning and growth. When children are able to serve themselves it promotes autonomy and problem-solving skills. It also affords the child the ability to decide how much food to take based on their inner need of hunger. Using serving utensils and jugs for pouring refines fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Furthermore, grace and courtesy skills such as saying “please” and “thank you” or waiting for one’s turn are developed.
