At Downtown Montessori, we experienced the magical transformation of live caterpillars into butterflies. As we eagerly awaited the butterfly transformations, we explored the Butterfly Life Cycle with nomenclature cards, observed preserved caterpillars and butterflies, and read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, a beloved story by Eric Carle. Day by day in our classroom, the children watched in awe as the caterpillars grew. Once they had formed themselves into a hanging chrysalis, we transferred them into a screened butterfly house. The children eagerly anticipated the emergence of the butterflies from the chrysalis. Once the butterflies all hatched, we released them into the wild. It was a beautiful learning experience for the children to see the wonder of nature!
