Transferring

The transferring activities that the children do within the Under 2 classroom help to refine their eye-hand coordination, strengthen the muscles of the hand and wrist, foster concentration, and provide the child with the opportunity to practice daily activities. All of these experiences will help them build the foundation they need to do more complex things as they become more skilled. (Click for more information and full photos.)

Solar System

The solar system is a very popular topic within the classroom. The child is invited to work with the solar system activity where they can learn about planets, asteroids, comets, and other interesting facts about space. In this image, the child arranged the planets in order from their distance from the sun, and followed up with their own drawing of the solar system.

Holiday Family Party

A great time was had at our Holiday Celebration! We sang “Jingle Bells”, “Vive Le Vent”, “The Reindeer Hokey Pokey” & “All I Want for Christmas” while donning festive hats or jingling bells. We enjoyed some refreshments and some time together. Thank you for your generous donations to the charity we supported this season, The Red Door Shelter. Prick-a-Shape

The child’s eye-hand coordination skills are used and refined while working on the Prick-a-Shape activity. After the shape has been pricked all around its outline, the child
can feel the bumpy trail, hold up their sheet towards the light to see the pattern or
delicately tear out the pattern from the surrounding area. (Click for more information.)

Enhancing Proprioception

When we explore playdough and focus on manipulating the dough into specific simple shapes, we open an opportunity to develop proprioception: the sense that enables us to know where our body parts are, and what they are doing, without visually observing them. Manipulating the dough and aiming towards specific shapes is a fun way to experiment with pressure control while reinforcing this vital sensory system! (Please click for more information.)

Culture: Life Cycles

There are many activities in the Montessori classroom that teach the children about different life cycles such as that of animals, plants, and humans. These activities train the child’s faculties of observation, patience, and admiration, as well as build vocabulary and knowledge about metamorphosis. (Click to find out more about the process.)
