Language Through Books

The books within our classroom are filled with familiar sights, such as animals, families, vehicles, and food. The children often place a finger on an image and name what they see. When reading together, the teachers will engage in conversation with the children, helping them to learn new words or phrases. (Please click for more information and full photos.)

Language Development

When teaching children about letters using the Montessori method, our focus is on the sounds the letters make rather than their names.
The Montessori Sandpaper Letters, First Sounds activity, and building words through the Pink, Blue, and Green boxes help children with letter recognition, pronunciation, printing, and early stages of reading. (Please click for more detailed information.)

Holiday Cheer

This holiday season, the Casa East community wanted to spread some holiday cheer! We practiced singing along to Jingle Bells and even made our own bells to play as we performed for the Under 2 community. All the children had fun showcasing their talents and we wish everyone Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays! (Click to check out the effects!)

Diwali Celebration

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a celebration that includes festive food, fireworks, special candles, lamps called Diyas, and rangoli designs. The children made the rangoli designs from bright coloured sand glued onto construction paper and painted diyas. Learning about various cultures and their celebrations encourages children to respect differences in all people, see the similarities, and recognize the importance of diversity. Pumpkin Carving

In celebration of Halloween, the Infants had the opportunity to participate in a favourite holiday past time: pumpkin carving! Not only was this a fun activity, but it encouraged social interactions and engaged the children’s various senses as they scooped out the inside of a large pumpkin, smelled its fresh aroma, and felt the sticky, squishy innards, slimy seeds, and hard shell. Planting Seeds

Watching plants grow is a fun and education experience for children. Their enormous curiosity and excitement over anything new makes them a natural for gardening. Growing plant seeds with children teaches them how nature works, responsibility in caring for living things, and interest in environment sustainability and pride in themselves.

Hundred Board

The Hundred Board is an activity that involves placing 100 white tiles with the numbers 1-100 written on them onto a blue board that is sectioned into 100 squares.  Since the blue squares are blank, the child has to place the tiles (which are mixed up) on the appropriate squares until they have achieved the correct sequence. There is a control sheet with numbers for the child to check his/her work or to use as a guide. This is a great activity for children to learn sequence of numbers 1-100, as well as recognizing the numbers that go between 10’s, 20’s and 30’s.  One of the activities a child may do afterwards is cutting and gluing numbers or writing the numbers out to make their own hundred board, just as Barrett is doing in the picture.
