Dressing Frames
The 4 dressing frames that we have in our classroom are a velcro frame, a zipper frame, a button frame and a snap dressing frame. These are all part of the practical life area. The dressing frames encourage fine motors skills, eye-hand coordination, as well as foster independence and self help skills. (Please click for the full photos.)
ViewLunar New Year Celebration
The Under 3 class celebrated the Year of the Rabbit by painting with chopsticks, dressing in traditional clothing from East Asia, and having both Casa classes parade through our class. We read books about the Lunar New Year and practiced saying “Kung Hei Fat Choy!” (Please click for more information and the full photos.)
ViewCaring for Plants
One way in which the children can take care of the environment is by caring for the various plants in their classroom. They are able to water the plants and clean their leaves. The children enjoy maintaining and caring for plant life while learning about botany life cycles and the necessities of soil, sun, air and water. (Please click for the full photos.)
ViewSensory Bottles
The sensory bottles allow a child to explore visually and improve their olfactory sense through the scent of various substances such as mango, vanilla, cinnamon, etc. The child has the opportunity to refine their sense of smell and sight, as well as their cognitive skills. This activity also aids the child in their ability to think, judge, and compare elements in their environment.
ViewDiwali Celebration
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a celebration that includes festive food, fireworks, special candles, lamps called Diyas, and rangoli designs. The children made the rangoli designs from bright coloured sand glued onto construction paper and painted diyas. Learning about various cultures and their celebrations encourages children to respect differences in all people, see the similarities, and recognize the importance of diversity. ViewDay for Truth and Reconciliation
The Under 3 children learned about how “every child matters” and listened to stories about Indigenous culture and the significance of Orange Shirt Day. They helped to create a community bulletin board by making hand prints and colouring on orange t-shirt cut-outs. The children and staff throughout the centre wore orange shirts in solidarity on the commemorative day.
ViewBuilding With Blocks
The possibilities are endless when building with blocks. Constructing with blocks enhances eye-hand coordination along with fine motor and cognitive skills through a creative and scientific approach. Language skills are also encouraged as the child describes what they are building.
ViewWashing a Plant
The children gently and carefully dust and wipe each leaf, making sure that all the plants are looking their best and are as healthy as can be. Caring for their environment helps children practice being active contributors to their community.
