Making Playdough

Playdough ingredients measured out in bowls

Our Casa East students embarked on a creative and hands-on adventure by making

their own playdough. This delightful activity was a huge hit, providing a perfect blend of

learning and fun.

Why Playdough? Playdough is more than just a fun activity; it’s a fantastic tool for young

children to develop fine motor skills, engage their senses, and unleash their creativity. Our

homemade playdough activity also introduced the children to basic measuring and mixing,

making it a wonderful educational experience.

Step-by-Step Fun:

1. Getting Ready:

o The children gathered in a circle, ready to mix and measure the ingredients.

o We talked about the various ingredients and their roles in making playdough.

2. Mixing the Ingredients:

o With the help of our teachers, each child measured flour, salt, and cream of

tartar.

Pouring oil into the dry mixture

o They stirred in vegetable oil and some water.

3. “Cooking Up” Some Dough:

o We carefully poured some hot water into the mixture, stirring continuously until it

turned into smooth dough.

Mixing all of the ingredients together

o Once cooled, the dough was handed out to the eager children.

4. Kneading and Playing:

o Using an eyedropper and some food colouring, each child chose their favourite

colour for their own ball of dough.

o The children kneaded their playdough, enjoying the soft, squishy texture.

o Creativity flowed as they made various shapes and figures.

The Joy of Learning: Our playdough-making activity wasn’t just about having fun; it was also

about learning and developing important skills. The children practiced measuring, following

instructions, and working together in groups. They also got to explore different textures and

colors, thus enhancing their sensory experience.

Memorable Moments:

 The excitement on the children’s faces as the playdough came together.

 The pride they showed in their colourful creations.

 The teamwork and camaraderie as they shared tools and ideas.
