Musical Instruments

A collage of a child exploring a drum, maraca, tambourine, and shaker

Young children learn through the senses as they interact with their environment. In the Under 2 classroom, we offer different types of materials that engage a child’s sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell, among others. In this activity, the child is exploring their sense of hearing as they interact with the musical instruments. As the child picks up the instruments and feels and holds them, their sense of sight, touch, temperature, and the baric sense of weight are activated. Exploring musical sounds enhances creativity, expression, autonomy, and an awareness of cause and effect.
