Second Step – Social Emotional Learning

Empathy training is an important part of our Montessori classroom. Through the Second Step early learning program, we continuously engage the children in social emotional learning through tools such as puppets, picture cards, songs, role playing, and poems are used to build empathy.

Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is a great time to learn about our planet and how we can take care of it every day. Some of our activities included using recycled newspaper to make biodegradable planters and then filling the planters with soil and seeds, and misting them with water.

Practical Life!

As the children in the Under 2 classroom start to imitate the practical life around them, they are offered child-size materials to use to fulfill their need for exploration, movement, acquisition, repetition, and feeling that they can be part of the community. Walking Water Experiment!

The North Casa children filled two glasses with water and food colouring. They dipped one side of a paper towel into the colourful water and folded the rest of the paper towel over into an empty glass between the other 2 glasses. As an added element, the red water and the blue water combined in the middle glass to make purple water. It was such a sight to see!

French Class!

During their weekly class, the children participate in a variety of activities that encourage their French language and literacy skills. Through songs, poems, learning cards and games, the children learn vocabulary pertaining to colours, foods, days of the week, months of the year, weather, animals, shapes, numbers and simple phrases and questions.

The First Snowfall!

The children in the Under 3 Community were thrilled to play with Snow!!! The first snowfall was an exciting experience for the children as they used their gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and senses to shovel, scoop, mold, and go sledding!

In the Under 2 classroom, the children learn about various celebrations through art activities. Art is an important medium for young children’s early development because it engages their senses, encourages their creativity, and supports their cognitive and social-emotional skills.

Pumpkin and Gourd Exploration

We observed the different colours, shapes and sizes of pumpkins and gourds, and learned about the life cycles and names of the parts. As children explore, they become inquisitive of the natural environment around them, helping them to have a better understanding and respect for nature.

Transferring With Tongs

Here is a child in the Under 3 classroom using the transferring with tongs activity. This is one of many activities within the classroom that help to refine small movements of the hand; to exercise and develop hand eye-coordination; and to coordinate two hands working together.
