After the children in the Under 2 classroom have their snack or lunch, they learn to clean up after themselves, which gives them a great sense of productivity and ownership as they are encouraged to take care of their environment.

Meal Times

Meal times not only encourage children’s social interactions, but also provide them the opportunity to gain and build their independence. As the children in our Under Two community eat lunch around our child-size tables, a teacher sits with the group to assist anyone needing assistance. Size and age appropriate furniture, dishes, and utensils are used to promote self-feeding, self-help, and confidence.

Dressing for the Outdoors

Children observe many practical life actions in their everyday lives such as dressing and undressing. With this in mind, one of the best ways of nurturing children’s positive self esteem is to encourage their already strong interest in doing things on their own.

Watering Plants

Taking care of the environment is an important element of the Under 2 curriculum. One way in which the children can do this is by caring for the various plants in their classroom. The child in the photo is  exemplifying great care for her classroom environment and the natural elements within it through watering the plant.

Self-Help and Independence

In our Under 2 program, the children learn a variety of self-help skills during meals, such as serving themselves, eating independently with a spoon, drinking from an open cup, tucking in their chairs, cleaning up, washing their hands, and practicing grace and courtesy skills. What an achievement!

Practical Life

Practical Life is an area in which our Under 3 children learn real-life tasks such as scooping, pouring, sweeping, mopping, cooking and taking care of the self and environment. These activities allow the child to develop motor control, self-confidence, thinking outside the self, empathy for others and a feeling of being productive and belonging to the community.

Baking!

The Casa children partake in a food preparation activity weekly, in addition to peeling, spreading, etc. throughout the week. We create foods such as bread, cakes, and cookies, as well as non-baked goods such as smoothies and rice crispy squares. The best part is getting to eat our creation!

Pouring Activity

The materials in the Practical Life area of the Montessori community are meant to provide children with opportunities to coordinate and refine their hand movements by means of experience, particularly through repetition. The pouring activities aim to encourage precise movement, concentration, confidence, and independence by learning to do this task independently.
