Under 2

Musical Instruments

Young children learn through the senses as they interact with their environment. In the Under 2 classroom, we offer different types of materials that engage a child’s sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell, among others. Exploring musical sounds enhances creativity, expression, autonomy, and an awareness of cause and effect. (Click for more information!)

Books and Language

A variety of books are available for the Under 2 children to explore, including nursery rhymes, songs, repetitive patterns, colours, shapes, numbers, and textures. We are beginning to explore books about the changing season, upcoming holidays, celebrations, and special days in our community. Books open a window into new experiences and encourage language development and extend concentration. (Click for more information and full photos.)

Cutting

Cutting with a knife is a skill that is necessary in everyday life. The child is shown how to hold the fruit steady and safely with one hand as they use their other hand to cut up the fruit. Gaining experience cutting velcro fruit and vegetables aids the child in using a real knife. (Please click for the full photos and more information.)

Making Fruit Salad

The children enjoyed observing and exploring various fruit. We practiced naming the fruit and identifying the colours we see on them. The children took turns scooping each fruit into a mixing bowl and mixing everything together. Then we chilled the fruit salad in the fridge and tasted our colourful treat during afternoon snack. So yummy! (Click for more information.)

Enhancing Proprioception

When we explore playdough and focus on manipulating the dough into specific simple shapes, we open an opportunity to develop proprioception: the sense that enables us to know where our body parts are, and what they are doing, without visually observing them. Manipulating the dough and aiming towards specific shapes is a fun way to experiment with pressure control while reinforcing this vital sensory system! (Please click for more information.)

Planting Sweet Corn

The children help to turn the soil, sprinkle seeds, and water the soil to help the seeds germinate. Each day the children are excited to revisit the planters to observe the sprouts that have started to appear. This activity fosters a love for nature and allows them to explore cause and effect. To commemorate Ramadan, the children explored headwear like a kufi and hijab, decorated lanterns, did printmaking with star and moon shapes, and glued colourful tissue paper onto mac-tac. We read stories about Ramadan and the children observed the application of a henna tattoo that can be worn during Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan. (Please click for more information.)
