ViewPractical life activities allow the child to develop fine and gross motor control, self-confidence, thinking outside the self, and a feeling of being productive and belonging to the community. Practical Life involves care of the self, the environment, and grace and courtesy. Here, a child is using a sponge and bucket of water to clean a table. Very helpful!
ViewOpening and closing containers provides practice using both hands working together on various mechanisms, such as small boxes with lids, to zippered bags, screw-top jars, and much more! The refinement of movement and eye-hand coordination prepares a child for further practical life activities.
ViewThe weekly Yoga class with Cheeba is an opportunity for the children to learn and practice meditation, relaxation, balance, breathing, strengthening, and self-control, and extends into the classroom. A child may use a Yoga mat when desired to practise what they’ve learned in Yoga class. In these photos, a child is practicing the Cobra, Downward Dog, and Table Top poses independently.
ViewThe West Casa classroom experimented with colours, fats and soaps. They witnessed milk mixing with food colouring and soap pushing the fat away from itself when combined. This creates swirls of colours and beautiful movement in the bin. Look at the power of soap!
ViewPractical life activities give children the opportunity to participate and contribute to their community. They involve care of the self as well as the indoor and outdoor environment, grace and courtesy, and control and refinement of movement. Taking care of our classroom by polishing a mirror gives us a sense of belonging and being a productive citizen in our community.
ViewAfter the children in the Under 2 classroom have their snack or lunch, they learn to clean up after themselves, which gives them a great sense of productivity and ownership as they are encouraged to take care of their environment.

ViewDuring our weekly French class, the children are exposed to songs, poems, learning cards and games through which they learn vocabulary pertaining to colours, foods, days of the week, months of the year, weather, animals, shapes, numbers and simple phrases and questions.
