Sink or Float?

Young children have a natural curiosity for the world around them. The children had fun engaging in our sink or float science experiment, which helps children explore the concept of buoyancy. Caring for Fish

In the U3 community, we have an aquarium and the children can watch, feed, and help keep their home clean. Observing, caring for, and feeding living things teaches children compassion, respect, and patience as well as responsibility and caretaking. It can be therapeutic, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. (Please click for full photos and information.)

Mopping – Practical Life

Practical Life activities, such as mopping, are prominent features of the Toddler Montessori curriculum. Caring for the environment demonstrates an understanding of responsibility and safety in the classroom for oneself and their classmates. (Please click for more information.)

Family BBQ

We hosted our first barbecue in several years and families of every classroom attended to mix and mingle. Proceeds of cash donations went to the SickKids Foundation. We also held a silent auction of canvas paintings designed by each classroom and the proceeds were also donated to the SickKids Foundation. Thank you to everyone for your support. We had a great time!

Sensory Walk

The children are exploring their sense of touch using their feet! They walked along various materials and explored the different sensations through their feet, comparing how each felt. It is a great activity to help with balance and coordination, and can be fun to create at home. (Please click for more info and full photos.)

Our Grass Head Plant

Click to see how we made and take care of ‘Bob’, our classroom grass head plant. We make sure the soil is moist, gently cut his hair, and tidy up our grass clippings. The children created and grew their own grass head plant. This fun practical life activity teaches a young child how to gently care for a delicate plant.

Earth Day

Earth day was a great time to learn about our planet and how we can contribute every day to take care of it. We used recycled paper to make art and practiced how we can recycle/compost in the classroom and at home. (Please click for more information).

Dressing Frames

The 4 dressing frames that we have in our classroom are a velcro frame, a zipper frame, a button frame and a snap dressing frame. These are all part of the practical life area. The dressing frames encourage fine motors skills, eye-hand coordination, as well as foster independence and self help skills. (Please click for the full photos.)

Lunar New Year Celebration

The Under 3 class celebrated the Year of the Rabbit by painting with chopsticks, dressing in traditional clothing from East Asia, and having both Casa classes parade through our class. We read books about the Lunar New Year and practiced saying “Kung Hei Fat Choy!” (Please click for more information and the full photos.)
