Winter Fun!

The wonderful winter weather provides a great opportunity for the children to get outside and enjoy the snow. During a beautiful snowfall, the children go for a ride or pull friends in a sled, shovel snow, fill buckets, and make snow angels. What fun!

Watering Plants

Taking care of the environment is an important element of the Under 2 curriculum. One way in which the children can do this is by caring for the various plants in their classroom. The child in the photo is  exemplifying great care for her classroom environment and the natural elements within it through watering the plant.

Diwali Celebration!

The children in the Under 2 classroom celebrated Diwali by dressing up in traditional clothing, painting fireworks, and helping to make “Doodh Peda”, which is an Indian sweet that is prepared during festive occasions. We also played with instruments along with Diwali songs and listened to the story “Diwali Lights”. What a wonderful celebration!

NWRCT Arts and Crafts Fundraiser

The children in the Under 2 community created sun catchers by using their pincer grasp to place pressed flowers on a piece of acrylic glass. The artwork was part of our arts and crafts fundraiser for the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto.

Miigwech (Thank You)

We were excited to host our summer family BBQ and fundraising event in support of The Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto. The teachers and children together created Indigenous inspired artwork on canvases and garden stepping stones for our silent auction. We also had a food truck come to provide the delicious food. Fire It Up BBQ catering did an amazing job and everyone had a great time!

Self-Help and Independence

In our Under 2 program, the children learn a variety of self-help skills during meals, such as serving themselves, eating independently with a spoon, drinking from an open cup, tucking in their chairs, cleaning up, washing their hands, and practicing grace and courtesy skills. What an achievement!

Puzzles

We offer puzzles to children on a daily basis. Activities involving fine motor development help children learn to rotate their wrists and use their fingers more constructively. Working with children help them learn to manipulate their hands in unique ways and even to use them simultaneously to complete a given task. Puzzles strengthen the muscles in the hands and wrists, promote cognitive development, and reinforce hand-eye coordination, which are skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

Metamorphosis of a Butterfly

We had the opportunity to witness the metamorphosis of a butterfly. We received many containers with a caterpillar in each. In the days following, we observed each of the caterpillars molt and evolve into a chrysalis and then emerge as a beautiful Painted Lady Butterfly. The butterflies dried their wings and we were able to watch their proboscis (tongue) uncoil as they sipped the Gatorade from the mesh. Later we gathered in the playground to set the butterflies free into their natural habitat. What an amazing experience!
